The Israelites and the Philistines were at war. The Philistines had a champion; a giant over 9 feet tall! Every day for 40 days he had called out," Choose a man to fight with me. If he wins, we will be your servants, but if I win, you must serve us!" He did this every morning and again in the evening. The soldiers of Israel were terrified at the sight of the giant. David was a shepherd boy. He had already been chosen by God, and anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel. His father, Jesse, sent David to take some food to his brothers who were soldiers in the army of Israel. So David got someone to watch his sheep and he set off to see about his brothers. His brothers told him about the giant. "The king will reward the man who conquers the giant. He will give him great riches, and he can marry the king's daughter. Also his father will not have to pay taxes anymore. David said, " Who is this Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" King Saul thought David was too young to fight the giant. David told him how he had killed a lion and a bear when they had tried to harm lambs in the flock. "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine," said David. The king put his armor and helmet on David, but they didn't fit him. David took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the brook, and put them into his bag. He had his sling in his hand. Goliath, the giant, cursed David in the name of his false gods. David said," You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts. The battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands." David took out a stone, slung it and struck the giant in the forehead. He fell on his face to the earth. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran away. The Lord won a great victory for the Israelites that day.

  • After the death of Moses, Joshua became the leader of God's people. He led the army of Israel. They had entered the land of Canaan after wandering around for 40 years in the wilderness. Spies had been sent into the city of Jericho, and had been helped by a woman named Rahab.
  • The people of Jericho were very worried because of the huge army outside the gates of their city. The Lord gave instructions to Joshua. The people followed his instructions.
  • The soldiers marched around the city once a day for six days. The priests blew the trumpets before the Ark of the Covenant as they carried it around the city. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times with the priests blowing on the trumpets. The people were to be silent. Then as a signal, the priests blew one long blast with the ram's horn and the people gave a shout. The wall fell down flat, just as God had promised.
  • Joshua's army and all the people had followed the command. God kept His promise and they captured the city. Rahab and her family were saved. Rahab later married a man of Israel and they had children .
  • Her great-great-grandson was David, king of Israel.

The children of Israel had lived in Egypt for 430 years. After Joseph died, there arose a ruler who did not remember how kind Joseph had been, and the people of Israel became slaves to the Egyptians. Ten plagues had been sent on the Egyptians so that Pharoah would let the Israelites be free.

In the last plague that came upon them, the firstborn of every Egyptian family died. Pharoah finally agreed to let them go. But when he realized that he was losing all his slaves, he decided to go and bring them back. He took his soldiers and 600 of the best chariots along with all the chariots in Egypt. The Israelites were afraid when they saw the chariots coming. The Red Sea was in front of them, and the Egyptians were following behind them. There seemed to be no escape. Moses told them, " The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still."

God told Moses to lift up his rod and stretch out his hand over the sea to divide it, and the children of Israel could cross. The angel of the Lord moved from in front of the Israelites to a place behind them. The cloud also moved. It was light on Israel's side, and dark on the Egyptian's side. And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea.

All that night the Lord caused an east wind to blow. The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. The Egyptians ran after them and followed them into the sea.

They saw the Israelites crossing on dry land, and they thought they could, too. The people of Israel all got across to the other side. Then the Egyptian army became confused and the wheels started coming off the chariots. They could not overtake the Israelites. The water came crashing down on the soldiers, and they were all lost in the sea.
Moses sang a song of praise to God for the great blessing that had come to his people that day.

joseph

Joseph was seventeen years old and was the favorite son of his father, Jacob. His father gave him a coat of many colors. When his brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more, they hated him. He had dreams about his family bowing down to him. They hated him even more when he told them his dreams. Once his father sent him to see about his brothers as they cared for the sheep. "Look," they said. "This dreamer is coming. Let's kill him and throw him into a pit. We will say that a wild animal has killed him." Reuben said, "Don't kill him. Just put him in this pit." Reuben planned to go back later and get him. As the brothers sat down to eat, they looked up and saw some men coming on camels. They were traders on their way to Egypt. They sold Joseph to the traders for 20 pieces of silver. The brothers took his coat and dipped it in the blood of a young goat. They told their father,"We found this. Do you know whether it is your son's coat or not?" Jacob said," It is my son's coat. A wild animal has killed him." Jacob was so sad, and he cried and cried. His sons did not tell their father what had really happened. Many years later, Joseph became a ruler in Egypt. His brothers came to Egypt and they did bow down to him. Joseph forgave his brothers for the way they had treated him.

noah

Noah wNoah was a good man. He walked with God and was pleasing to Him. He did not live as the people around him lived. They were wicked and violent. God warned Noah that the earth was going to be destroyed with a flood, but He told him how he could save his family and himself. He could also save some of the animals. God told Noah exactly how to build the ark. It was to be 300 cubits long. That's about as long as one and one-half football fields. It was REALLY BIG! It was to have three stories, a window and one door. Two of every kind of animal, both male and female, came to Noah to be kept alive. Seven of each of the "clean" animals went into the ark. Noah had stored food for the animals and for his family. There were eight people in the ark. Noah had a wife and they had three sons named Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Each of their sons also had a wife. After they were all in the ark, God shut the door and it began to rain. It rained and rained. For 40 days it rained! The water rose until it covered the highest mountains. When seven months had passed, the waters began to go down. The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Forty days after that, Noah sent out a raven. It had strong wings and could fly for a long time. It flew back and forth over the earth. Then he sent out a dove, but she became tired and came back. A week later, he sent her out again, and this time she came back with a fresh olive leaf. The trees were growing again! In seven more days, he sent her out again, and she never came back. Noah and his family were in the ark for one year. Noah waited for God to tell him when he could come out. Finally, God told him it was time. They were so glad to be on dry land again! Noah built an altar and offered thanks to God for keeping them safe. God put a rainbow in the sky and made a promise: "Never again will there be a flood that will destroy everything."
